On June 1, 2013, media executive Steven Swartz assumed the role of president and chief executive officer at Hearst Communications, one of the nation’s largest diversified media and information companies. He began In 1984 as a reporter at The Wall Street Journal after graduating from Harvard University with a Bachelor's Degree in American Government and Politics.
From 1989 to 1991, he served as editor on the Wall Street Journal's Page One staff. In the media landscape, from 1995 to 2000, he acted as president and chief executive officer of SmartMoney magazine, when it earned the Magazine of the Year title from Advertising Age and also garnered two National Magazine Awards.
From 2017 to 2022, he served as chairman of Associated Press. He has served on various boards and committees, including ten years as Lincoln Center corporate fund chair and eleven years as a Lincoln Center board member. Additionally, he completed a three-year term as co-chairman of Partnership for New York City.
Harvard Alumnus Swartz said, "I chose to go into the media business because of my fond memories of working days and nights doing news at (Harvard radio station) WHRB and the many late nights at the Crimson." Swartz oversees Hearst Communications’ extensive reach and influence through its major interests in cable television networks, software-as-a-service-solutions for aircraft maintenance, 33 television stations, and nearly 250 magazines worldwide.
