The Advertiser, founded in 1858, by Reverend John Henry Barrow, covers local, national, and international news for South Australia. Originally known as The South Australian Advertiser, the publication rebranded in 1889 to its current title. Its digital subscriber platform delivers a blend of breaking news, sports, lifestyle, entertainment, and hyperlocal community journalism.
In 1864, the company re-formed and came under the ownership of shareholders Philip Henry Burden, John Baker, Captain Scott, James Counsell, and Thomas Graves. In 1871, Barrow and King assumed sole ownership, and the Burden & Bonython firm gained possession. Bonython later assumed sole proprietorship from 1894 to 1929, and in 1929 sold The Advertiser to The Herald and Weekly Times.
The paper remained under the ownership of Keith Murdoch into the 1950s and later became acquired entirely by his son Rupert in 1987. The Advertiser currently operates as part of Advertiser Newspapers Pty Ltd (ADV), a subsidiary of News Corp Australia, itself a component of the News Corp worldwide conglomerate. Operating as Advertiser.com.au, the platform draws upon the resources of The Advertiser, Sunday Mail, Messenger, and other sister mastheads like news.com.au, The Herald Sun, and The Daily Telegraph.
The Advertiser operates on a standard advertising plus subscription business model.
Main competitors of The Advertiser include: The Australian, The Sunday Mail, ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation), Nine News Adelaide, Seven News Adelaide, and Ten News First Adelaide.
