Overview

The Brattleboro Reformer is Vermont's third-largest daily newspaper, covering all of Windham County, Vermont, and parts of neighboring Cheshire County, New Hampshire. It is owned by Vermont News and Media LLC.

History

Founded as a weekly in 1876 by Charles N. Davenport. Merged with the Phoenix in 1913 under the Brattleboro Publishing Co. Howard Crosby Rice became publisher and editor in 1918 and left the paper to his three children in 1971; son-in-law John Simpson Hooper served as editor from 1950 and publisher from 1964 until retiring in 1971. It was the first U.S. newspaper to publish same-sex union announcements alongside wedding notices, beginning in 1989. The Miller family of Pittsfield, Massachusetts (owners of The Berkshire Eagle) acquired the paper in the 1960s and sold it, along with the Eagle, Bennington Banner and Manchester Journal, to MediaNews Group in 1995. Alden Global Capital acquired MediaNews Group in 2013 as Digital First Media. Local investors bought the four-paper group back from Digital First Media in April 2016 as New England Newspapers Inc. In May 2021, NENI sold the Reformer, Bennington Banner and Manchester Journal to Vermont News and Media LLC, owned by Vermont software entrepreneur and investor Paul Belogour.
