It is owned by Alden Global Capital through its MediaNews Group subsidiary. Alden also owns subsidiaries and trade names Digital First, MNG Enterprises, Inc, and Southern California News Group, all of which have been cited in reference as owners of the Union-Tribune.

In 2015, the newspaper was acquired by Tribune Publishing Company, a media conglomerate. In February, 2018, it was announced it would be sold in a package with the Los Angeles Times to Nant Capital LLC for $500 million. In July 2023, Nant Capital’s owner, Patrick Soon-Shiong, sold the paper to Alden Global Capital.
