Thomson Reuters is a Canadian multinational information and media conglomerate headquartered in Toronto, providing financial, legal, tax and news information to businesses, governments and professionals. Its news division, Reuters, maintains a traditional wire-service news agency business alongside the company's broader data and software offerings.
Reuters was founded in London in 1851 by German-born Paul Julius Reuter. The Thomson Corporation, established in 1989 through a merger of International Thomson Organization and Thomson Newspapers, traced its own roots to a single Canadian newspaper, the Timmins Daily Press, acquired by Roy Thomson in 1934. In April 2008, Thomson Corporation acquired Reuters Group in a merger forming Thomson Reuters Corporation, with the Thomson family's holding company, The Woodbridge Company Limited, becoming majority shareholder. The company unified its dual-listed structure in 2009, ending separate listings on the London Stock Exchange and NASDAQ. In 2018, Thomson Reuters sold a 55 percent majority stake in its financial and risk business to funds managed by Blackstone in a deal valuing that business at $20 billion. Steve Hasker has served as President and CEO since March 2020.
