Overview

The National Archives of Trinidad and Tobago (NATT) is the principal repository for permanent government records and archives, as well as historical records of national significance, for the twin-island republic of Trinidad and Tobago. It operates under the Office of the Prime Minister.

History and Founding

The origins of the National Archives trace back to the aftermath of the 1903 fire at the Red House in Port of Spain, which destroyed almost all colonial records. Subsequent decades saw incremental efforts to establish systematic archival preservation. A Standing Records Committee was created in 1937. Following advocacy by historian Dr. Eric Williams, the government sought international technical assistance, and Schellenberg and Black submitted an archival survey report in 1958. These recommendations were implemented by the appointment of Enos Sewlal as Government Archivist in 1960, the formal founding year of the institution. The archives were initially housed in the basement of the Prime Minister's Office at White Hall and moved several times between 1964 and 1970. A Conservation Laboratory and Microfilm Unit were established in subsequent years.

Collections and Holdings

NATT holds government records tracing decisions and transactions from colonial rule to self-rule, comprising files and documents, microfilm, maps, photographs, and audiovisual records. Notable collections include the Registry of Slaves of the British Caribbean 1817–1834, inscribed on UNESCO's Memory of the World Register; the Trinidad Royal Gazette (1835–1962) and Trinidad and Tobago Gazette (1962–present); Proclamations of the Governor; Chinese Indentured Immigrant Registers (1852–1866); Slave Registers; and Commission of Enquiry reports. Historical newspapers, journals, and yearbooks also form part of the holdings.

The collection includes historical newspapers and the official government Gazette, providing a continuous record of public announcements, legal notices, and press-related official communications from 1835 to the present.

Access and Usage

Research services are available via the Search Room by appointment (email enquiries@archives.gov.tt). A small Reference Library supports researchers. The archives proactively engage with communities through exhibitions and outreach initiatives.
