Columbia, Missouri, USA
The Missouri School of Journalism offers a Bachelor of Journalism degree, with career paths including cross-platform editing and producing, photojournalism and documentary, reporting and writing, social and audience strategy, strategic communication, and television. The school awarded the world's first undergraduate journalism degree in 1909, the first master's degree in journalism in 1921, and the first Ph.D. in journalism in 1934.
Known for the "Missouri Method" of learning-by-doing, students practice journalism in professional, real-world outlets: the Columbia Missourian newspaper; KOMU-TV, the only university-owned full-power commercial television station in the United States; and KBIA, an NPR member station. The school has been continuously accredited by ACEJMC since the accrediting process began in 1949.
Founded by Walter Williams and officially opened September 14, 1908, the Missouri School of Journalism was the world's first school to grant a degree in journalism (the Superior School of Journalism in Paris, opened in 1899, predates it as a training institution but did not confer degrees). The first day's class published the first issue of the University Missourian, which became the Columbia Missourian. Williams became the school's first dean and later university president in 1930. He authored The Journalist's Creed, a statement of journalism ethics displayed in bronze at the National Press Club since 1958.
David D. Kurpius: Dean of the Missouri School of Journalism.
Walter Williams: Founding dean (1908-1931), later University of Missouri president.
Earl English: Dean from 1951, succeeding Frank L. Mott.
The Columbia Missourian, a professionally run community newspaper staffed by students, has published continuously since the school's first day of classes in 1908.
