The School of Journalism and Mass Communications (SJMC), part of the College of Information and Communications, offers undergraduate and graduate degrees, including a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Mass Communications and a Ph.D. in Mass Communication.
The school is professionally oriented and grounded in the liberal arts, with sequences spanning journalism, advertising, public relations, visual communications, sports media, and mass communications. Coursework includes media law and ethics, history and philosophy of mass media, brand strategy, and video journalism produced for the student-run Carolina Reporter.
The school was founded in 1923, making it one of the oldest communications schools in the country. It now operates within the College of Information and Communications alongside the School of Library and Information Science.
