Warsaw, Poland
The National Digital Archives (Narodowe Archiwum Cyfrowe, NAC) was established on 28 March 2008 by transforming the Archives of Audiovisual Records (Archiwum Dokumentacji Mechanicznej, founded in 1955) through a ministerial regulation issued by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage. The NAC was created to leverage advancing digital technologies for archival preservation and public access. It is one of three central State Archives in Poland, alongside the Central Archives of Historical Records and the Archives of Modern Records, forming a core part of Poland's national archival network. Its founding director, Nikodem Bończa-Tomaszewski, led the institution from 2007 through 2012. Since August 2016, the director has been Marianna Otmianowska.
The NAC collects and digitizes audiovisual materials as well as broad documentary collections. Holdings are divided into 159 archival groups. The collections encompass photographs, film reels, audio recordings, and paper records documenting Poland's history from the early 20th century through the present. Digital materials are accessible through the national Szukaj w Archiwach (Search in Archives) portal at szukajwarchiwach.gov.pl. The NAC applies ISO 14721 (OAIS) reference model standards for digital preservation and maintains a Central Digital Repository shared with regional state archives.
The NAC holds extensive photographic and audio-visual records documenting Polish public life, politics, culture, and media. The collections include press photographs, newsreel footage, and audio recordings relevant to the history of Polish journalism and broadcasting. As the successor to the Archives of Audiovisual Records, the NAC preserves a broad record of Polish media production and public communication throughout the 20th century.
Physical collections may be consulted in the reading room at the NAC's Warsaw facility. Digitized records are freely accessible online through the Search in Archives service. The NAC also publishes its research materials online free of charge through its Archive Library. Access for foreign users to the online portal was restored in January 2025 after a period of technical maintenance.
