Biography

W.E. Jones was the co-founder, with E.T. Davies, of The New Mexican, first published in Santa Fe on November 28, 1849, and now known as The Santa Fe New Mexican - dubbed "the West's oldest newspaper." As editors and proprietors, Davies and Jones stated in the paper's inaugural issue that it would be "devoted to the interests of the Territory of New Mexico in general," advancing literature, arts and sciences while urging Congress to establish a formal civil government for the newly acquired territory following the Mexican-American War. Ceran St. Vrain was listed as the paper's publisher within a year of its founding.
